After the Chinese civil war, Nationalist forces under the aegis of Republic of China (ROC) was defeated by the communist’s party or the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the former had to retreat into the Island of Taiwan. Until 21st December 1972, Australia officially recognized Republic of China(ROC), but suddenly this all changed when the then Prime Minister of Australia Gough Whitlam shifted Australian recognition from Taipei to Beijing and opened new doors for economic cooperation.
